Camping in the Northwest Territories, mapped

Short stays on untenured Commissioner’s land are allowed, according to the territorial government, but Inuvialuit, Gwich’in, Sahtu and Tłı̨chǫ lands and reserves need the landowner’s permission. This map shows which is which along the highways, and whether your phone will have signal.

What it shows

🌲Public land vs settlement lands

Settlement lands and reserves from Natural Resources Canada’s land survey records, with Commissioner’s and Crown land everywhere else.

🏞️Parks

National parks like Nahanni and Wood Buffalo, and wildlife areas: camp where the park allows it.

📶Will my phone work?

Cell sites and the terrain: signal is mostly in communities, so carry a satellite messenger.

⛺Spots worth a look

Campsites, road ends and public-land pull-offs scored for signal, flat ground, water and quiet.

🔥Wildfires

Live satellite hotspots and fire perimeters, and a link to the NWT’s wildfire operations.

📴Works offline

Save the South Slave, the Dehcho or the Dempster and Inuvik to your phone, and the map works with no service.
